Frequently Asked Questions about Bella Acupuncture & Wellness

  • What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a time tested form of Medicine. It has been used for thousands of years. It involves inserting single-use and pre-sterilized needles into various points on the body. The needles help to reduce inflammation and influence both circulation and a variety of neurotransmitters that will stimulate your body to make a change. Using a series of questions and other evaluations, an acupuncturist will review your condition, isolate the imbalances in your system and work with you to form a treatment plan that will help you regain health.
  • Does it hurt?
It CAN hurt but that is not typical. Rest assured your comfort is always considered throughout the treatment. Acupuncture is not SENSATION FREE but most people do not think it is painful. The feeling is often described as a throbbing or warm sensation, similar to a mosquito bite. A treatment will be customized to your needs and your sensitivity level. There are many treatment options available including superficial needle insertions, and minimal needle stimulation.
  • What Should I expect at my appointment:
At your first appointment you will have a brief discussion and you will receive an acupuncture treatment. After your needles are inserted, you may rest for the remainder of your appointment. Generally, the appointment can take anywhere from 30-40 minutes. More time with needles during a single treatment does NOT mean a better outcome. However, more frequent visits does correlate to better, quicker results. Please wear loose-fitting and comfortable clothing to your appointment. Please, no skinny jeans or tight leggings. Please do not arrive on an empty stomach. If it has been awhile since your last meal, having a small snack is recommended.
  • How does it work? What do the needles do?
The great thing about acupuncture is that your body does most of the work. There is nothing “in” the needle. The needles are simply used to stimulate acupuncture points/channels. The needle breaking your skin will help alert your body to bring some attention to the area being treated- either directly or indirectly.
  • How many treatments will I need?
This is a very common question. Unfortunately, there is no set answer. However, acupuncture is NOT a quick fix. Since acupuncture considers the imbalances of the WHOLE body and each person is different, results are not standard. Generally speaking, chronic conditions will take longer for results and acute conditions can typically be resolved quicker. Acupuncture has a cumulative effect. The more frequently you receive treatment, the faster things will change. Typically people notice some change following the first treatment but a series of 10-12 treatments is recommended before deciding whether or not to continue with treatment.
  • What conditions does acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture can treat a multitude of health conditions. Many people seek treatment for stress, anxiety, migraines, chronic pain, fatigue, Fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn's Disease, arthritis, back pain, sciatica, neck pain, insomnia, diabetes, sexual dysfunction, depression, cold and flu, allergies, asthma, autoimmune conditions, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, heavy or painful periods, amenorrhea, reproductive health, menopausal symptoms and many, many more.
